The water pump, or coolant pump, circulates coolant throughout the system. The radiator conducts heat away from the coolant. Radiator hoses connect the parts of the cooling system. The fan pulls air through the radiator when the vehicle is not moving fast enough to move the air.
The thermostat controls the temperature of the coolant. What is Car Coolant Made Of? Three types of coolant are routinely used to service vehicles cooling systems. Inorganic Acid Technology Coolant Inorganic acid technology IAT coolant is the conventional coolant that was used on older vehicles for many years.
Check the bottle label to see if you need to add water, since some coolant comes conveniently pre-mixed with it. This is especially important because the heater core in some vehicles is buried deep within the dash. If it gets plugged and needs replacing, the labour cost to take everything apart to get at it can go through the roof. Heater hoses should be flexible, not spongy or brittle, and the clamps holding them in place need to be tight. Any leaks should be repaired promptly, as a vehicle running low on coolant can overheat.
You may see white smoke from the tailpipe when the engine is warm white exhaust when cold is usually harmless condensation burning off , or detect a sweet burnt smell. Check the level in the coolant reservoir to be sure. But if it goes up too far, or if a warning light comes on, pull over, shut the vehicle off and raise the hood as soon as possible.

Coolant also serves the purpose of protecting metals and non-metallic elastomers like rubber and plastic parts in the engine and the cooling circuit. Without the proper coolant in your system, corrosion and component damage can lead to long-term effects. This is often misidentified by drivers as a radiator failure rather than simply acknowledging that the wrong coolant was used. If a radiator ends up badly corroded or full of plugging internal deposits, a malfunctioning coolant system is a likely cause.
And by the time you get that problem, people have forgotten that they used the wrong coolant and think the radiator has simply failed as a part. And because coolant-related problems happen inside the motor, you might not realize the damage being caused unless you look at the cooling passages and the internal heat-transfer surfaces of the engine.
The amount of time between coolant changes has been steadily increasing as engine technology improves. As recently as two decades ago, changing your coolant every two years was the standard recommendation. Then, about a decade ago, that span increased to five years. In fact, some vehicles are filled for life. But the one thing they all have in common is that they need to be protected.
So antifreeze usually ethylene glycol is added to the water to lower its freezing point to a safe level. In an air-cooled engine, the block and cylinder head are made with deep fins on the outside. Frequently a duct runs all around the fins, and an engine-driven fan blows air through the duct to take heat away from the fins. A temperature-sensitive valve controls the amount of air being pushed around by the fan, and keeps the temperature constant even on cold days. The Video Course teaches you everything about modern cars.
When the engine stops and cools, the valve closes again. Antifreeze should not be drained each summer; it can normally be left in for two or three years. Fins on an air-cooled cylinder are wider at the top, where most heat is generated. Horizontal air-cooled engines have cooling ducts to the fins. Engine Block 18 minutes.
