It May be carried out at home, during an antenatal appointment at your surgery or in hospital. All of these are normal, and will not cause any harm to you or your baby. It will not increase the chance of your baby getting an infection. Whether you have decided to have a membrane sweep or not, you will always be offered a date to have your labour induced started off. We will ensure you are offered an appointment to attend the hospital between 41 and 42 weeks of pregnancy for a review and to commence your induction of labour.

If you decide not to have a membrane sweep, this is not a problem as it is your choice. However, if your pregnancy continues beyond the recommended 12 — 14 days past your due date, you will be invited to attend the Quantock Assessment Unit for further review to ensure that both you and your baby remain well whilst awaiting the onset of natural labour.

How is a membrane sweep done? Your midwife or doctor will carry out a membrane sweep. They will give you an internal examination, try to insert a finger into the opening of your cervix neck of your womb and then gently but firmly move their finger around. This action should separate the membranes of the amniotic sac surrounding your baby from your cervix. This separation causes your body to release hormones prostaglandins which may kick-start your labour. Stretch and sweep procedures at 41 weeks of pregnancy greatly reduce the percentage of women who deliver their babies beyond term.

They may be offered as an alternative to inducing birth through medication or by rupturing the membranes. The procedure is safe in a normal pregnancy. There is a slight chance the membranes may break during the procedure. Ask your doctor or midwife about the benefits and risks before agreeing to a stretch and sweep procedure.
