Flipboard Email. After all, Joseph Gordon-Levitt showing up in The Rise of Cobra with a sleep apnea machine attached to his disfigured face was nothing if not an inspired choice : Paramount Pictures That overarching weirdness extended to Snake Eyes, a fan favorite who lets his ass-kicking ninja stuff do all the talking because, well, he had taken a vow of silence.

Paul Rudd Sexiest Man Alive? By Liz Kelly , Kate Halliwell , and 1 more. Share this story Twitter Facebook. Joe Origins. Aside from generally being one of the most well-known ninja characters in popular culture, Snake Eyes' trademark characteristic has been the fact that he's mute.

Considered something of an outsider among the G. Joes, Snake Eyes never speaks and remains in his military-adapted ninja garb at all times, making him the most mysterious G. Joe character. Even side-by-side with his fellow Joes like Duke or Roadblock, or his archenemy Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes is meant to be a cipher even when he's out in broad daylight. Joe: The Rise of Cobra changed Snake Eyes' muteness up slightly, retconning it as a vow of silence after the death of his Ninjutsu master.

This change ended up actually being very fitting for the character in positioning him as a laser-focused martial arts master.

A scene of Snake Eyes making a joke at the end of the film was also scrapped to maintain the character's muteness, but as one can already clearly see, that's not an approach the new Snake Eyes movie will be taking. Even before the first teaser trailer dropped, it was probably broadly expected that Snake Eyes would be talking in the movie.

Not only is Henry Golding a rising star, but the idea of centering an origin movie on a character who never talks would've been a quite tough act to pull off. There's also the matter of Snake Eyes remaining completely masked in a ninja suit for the entirety of his solo movie, as opposed to being one player in an ensemble as he was in the G. Joe films. That's not to say it'd be impossible, with 's Dredd and The Mandalorian masking their leading characters for all or most of their runtimes, but it wouldn't have been ideal.

Still, speech is another story, and with Golding portraying a new version of the character distinct from Ray Park's, introducing Snake Eyes without ever having him speak would have been difficult if not close to impossible to pull off.

Sure enough, the new teaser shows Snake Eyes speaking, while Di Bonaventura, as previously mentioned, describes the film as taking place before Snake Eyes loses his voice.

Joe cartoon or in the later sequel from DiC. He was silent in both of the series, but an explanation was never given. The series even lacked his traditional rivalry with Storm Shadow, so while it may be many fans' go-to version of the franchise, it definitely isn't a great place to get much Snake Eyes action.

The same can be said for the mids cartoon G. Joe: Sigma 6. Snake Eyes had a larger role in that series, but his backstory and the reason for him his silence weren't explored.

Resolute was a much darker animated series, written by Warren Ellis, that combines elements of the classic cartoon and the comics. The animated series pulled from the latter by showcasing Snake Eyes' origin and his feud with Storm Shadow. Their rivalry began when a young Storm Shadow requested for his uncle to teach him the Seventh Step to the Sun technique, which was a merciless killing maneuver. When he refused, Storm Shadow turned on his uncle and tried to have Zartan assassinate him.

Noticing that, Snake Eyes intervened and took the shots intended for his master, and was struck in the throat. In the animated series G. Joe : Renegades , Snake Eyes was only a recurring character. His backstory pulled mainly from the original Marvel comics, but mostly just regarding his relationship to Scarlett.
